Labor Unions

In the 1800s, there were labor unions frequently created to improve working conditions and wages for the working class man. In the1820s, labor unions attempted to decrease the working day from 12 to ten hours which interested many people. The Nation labor union was formed in 1866 and decreased the working day to eight hours. The economic depression of 1873 destroyed the nation labor union. In 1869, the Knights of labor was created and offered membership to all working class men of any race or gender. This union was eventually disbanded when a huge amount of negative publicity was created due to a bomb that was supposedly thrown at police men by a Knights of Labor member. The American Federation of labor was created in 1886 which focused on organizing skilled workers.
