Presidential Election Blog

Stephen Douglas was born in Brandon, Vermont in 1813. Throughout his life, he was very involved in government and Congress. Stephen Douglas was attorney general of Illinois in 1834, member of the legislature in 1835, secretary of state in 1840,judge of the Supreme Court in 1841, and member of the House of Representatives in 1847. He heavily believed in an idea referred to as popular sovereignty.Popular sovereignty is where territories are allowed to vote whether they would like to be a slave or non-slave state. During the election, Stephen Douglas was a northern democrat and he did not want to abolish slavery.-Alexis Basgil
